Minecraft Quilt

Notes:

I finished the Minecraft quilt! I wanted to make a quilt for my sister-in-law and she picked a minecraft quilt. The tutorials by Seriously, I Think it Needs Stitches were awesome, but I did end up modifying a few of the blocks slightly.

I did get a little Minecraft burnout about halfway through. The tutorials really streamlined the sewing for most blocks but it was still a lot of small pieces to cut out for each block. I also got a little burnout when it came time to do the sashing. Sashing is definitely a weakness of mine and  I was really worried about having wonky borders after the Disappearing Hourglass Quilt I did earlier this year. Thankfully they worked out pretty well and I think I only had to unpick one row to get it right.

I decided on a quilting design before I even had the quilt done, a sort of maze block. It was a little tricky keeping the lines fairly straight since I was doing free motion on the long arm but I just tried to go slow (always challenging for me) and I don’t think many of the not-so-straight lines stand out. I used purple thread that matches the border. It obviously shows up pretty well on the light colored blocks but I don’t think it stands out too much, especially from a distance.

This was the first backing that I pieced with multiple fabrics. Shhhh it’s because I didn’t quite have enough of the main fabric that I had stockpiled. I really loved the squiggly pattern on the back and piecing the back really wasn’t that bad so I’ve started doing it on my next couple quilts in line.

Even though it was supposed to be a Christmas gift, I couldn’t resist giving it today when we were all together for Thanksgiving. My sister-in-law loved it! Since it’s a twin sized quilt, it will be perfect for her family to snuggle under together. I’m really happy with how it turned out!

Happy Sewing!
